Myrtle Beach, SC Real Estate

Myrtle Beach Proper is located in the heart of South Carolina's Northern coast, often referred to as the “Grand Strand."  The Grand Strand encompasses the beaches of Horry County and Georgetown County.  This area features a 60 mile stretch of Atlantic Ocean coastline, which runs along the Long Bay from Pawley's Island to North Myrtle Beach & Little River (just below the North Carolina state line).

Myrtle Beach Development History

The city of Myrtle Beach is located in Horry County, South Carolina.

In 1901, the Burroughs & Collins Company built the beach’s first hotel, the Seaside Inn. The beach community was called New Town until the Horry Herald sponsored a contest to officially name the area. Mrs. Burroughs, wife of the founder of Burroughs & Collins, won with the name Myrtle Beach, which she chose for the many wax myrtle trees growing wild along the shore.

In the 1920s, a group of businessmen began building an upscale resort called Arcady at the northern end of Myrtle Beach. This area included Ocean Forest Hotel, Pine Lakes International Country Club- the Grand Strand’s first golf club and subsequently home of Sports Illustrated Magazine.

In the mid 1930s, the Intracoastal Waterway was opened to pleasure boats and commercial shipping. The Myrtle Beach Pavilion was built in 1949. Myrtle Beach was incorporated in 1938 and became a city in 1957.

In the 1950s, the Air Force Base was established for coastal patrols and training during World War II. Followed by the Myrtle Beach International Airport in the mid 1970s.

Myrtle Beach Going Forward

The Air Force Base was closed in 1993 and is now being redeveloped into a mixed use residential and commercial live/ work community. The Myrtle Beach Pavilion was closed in September 2006 and site development plans will be forthcoming.

The city of Myrtle Beach has a population of over 25,000 year round residents and over 14 million annual visitors. The Myrtle Beach area, considered to be the golf capital of the world, has over 100 golf courses with over 4 million rounds of golf played a year.

Myrtle Beach is the central hub of an area that is taking shape to be one of the premier vacation / retirement destination on the East Coast and is one of the fastest growth metropolitan area in the United States.
